I came to travel design a few years ago after spending years exploring the world with my family. South Africa was my chance to experience what I’d be sharing with clients—and it did something to me I wasn’t expecting.

It started beautifully at Jaci’s Lodges in Madikwe, breakfast with elephants at the Marico River—the kind of moment that made me want to work in this industry. Then we moved to Marataba Safari Lodge in Limpopo’s Waterberg region, where luxury met purpose in the most profound way.

Day 5 brought the surprise of our trip: joining Marataba’s rhino conservation program. As a mum, I’ve taught my kids about endangered species. As someone passionate about meaningful travel, I knew these experiences were special. But standing there watching vets, guides, and security work together to dart, microchip, and protect a rhino from poachers—I finally felt it.

The team’s passion was overwhelming. Poachers are still active here, but this rhino now has a fighting chance. Being part of that, witnessing that dedication—it’s the most meaningful thing I’ve experienced in all my years of travel.

At Sun City Resort, our group (the Rhinos—fitting, right?) won the video competition by highlighting conservation. High winds cancelled our hot air balloon prize, but it didn’t matter. We’d already gotten our reward.

Our final night at the Palace of the Lost City, swimming in that impossibly clear pool, I realized something: after all the countries I’ve visited and adventures I’ve had, this is the trip that confirmed why I chose this career path. It’s not just about luxury lodges or beautiful views—it’s about connection, purpose, and experiences that change you.

South Africa, you touched this travel mum’s heart. I’ll be back. And I’ll be bringing my clients with me, next September.
